About Richard

Champion Jockey Richard Dunwoody is one of Britain’s most successful jockeys. He dominated English National Hunt racing in the 80’s and the 90s, winning the Big Three races - Grand National, The Champion Hurdle and Cheltenham Gold Cup.

When he hung up his racing silks at the age of 35 due to injury in 1999, he had won a record 1,699 races and endured 672 falls. He is best known for his partnership with the legendary Desert Orchid on whom he won seven races and was awarded the MBE for services to horse racing.

Since hanging up his boots, Richard has focused his determination on various expeditions including a 350-mile cross-country ski race to the Magnetic North Pole. He is involved in many charitable activities including running marathons. He is a regular coach within the racing industry, is a highly respected motivational speaker and has many links with the world of corporate hospitality. He is also a regular contributor to racing and sporting media and leads holidays for Wild Frontiers

Training and Fitness:

Training for the expedition in Finse, Norway was followed by extensive training at home including pulling tyres for up to 18 hours a week. In contrast to keeping a very low weight throughout his years as a top jockey, Richard had to put on a stone in preparation for the trip.
