CORTAFLEX N.H. LEGENDS CHARITY RACE – 21st October

by Caroline - 05/07/2007 at 11:35

A Day at the Races......

Whether that brings to mind Cheltenham, Queen or the Marx Brothers what is certain is that a great day was enjoyed at Kempton Park racecourse on Sunday, October 21st when THE CORTAFLEX NH LEGENDS CHARITY RACE enabled some of the best-known jockeys ever in jump racing to take part in a flat race and to prove that they have lost none of their flair and skill.

A VIP lunch and auction was held prior to the race and Richard Phillips, auctioneer extraordinaire, did an amazing and highly entertaining job, to raise at least 35K for THE INTERCHANGE SHACKLETON SOUTH POLE EXPEDITION and Richard’s three charities – SPARKS, Spinal Research and Racing Welfare. The jockeys were auctioned as well with Richard himself and Phil Midddleton, the MD of CORTAFLEX, fetching an astounding 4K each! One of the most fiercely contested items was to have a name on the flag that Richard will plant at the Geographic South Pole, when he arrives there some time in January 2008.

A real gem on the day was when John Francome discovered an old copy of ‘Sporting Life” in his bag and Richard actually remembered details of a race that had been reported in it!

The actual race at 5.30 was won by Simon Sherwood, one of the legendary Desert Orchid’s jockeys, aboard Nicky Henderson’s Royaleety, just pipping off Brendan Powell on Warne’s Way at the post. All of the jockeys did themselves proud though and managed to stay in the saddle for the whole 1 mile 4 furlongs of the race.

This was a one-off occasion which will be remembered with great pleasure by all those that attended.

Richard would like to thank everyone involved for their generous support in making it such a happy and successful occasion.

There are also a few limited edition photo collages of the day available (only 20 have been produced) and all are signed by all of 12 jockeys. To bid for one of these unique photos, please e mail the amount you would like to bid to info@lizampairee.com. The highest bidder will receive their photo (with a personal message from Richard) upon his return from the South Pole in February 2008.

Cortaflex is the UK’s top supplier of joint supplements for horses, dogs and humans. It is used by both trainers and jockeys alike and was listed as a key factor in Richard Quinn’s successful comeback from retirement last year. www.cortaflex.co.uk
